How to Effectively Use Keyword Research

Carrying out and utilizing proper keyword research can really boost a website’s presence on multiple search engines. The key (pun intended) is to create a keyword planner that will help you determine which keywords will be the most effective for your search campaign. Now you may be wondering, what exactly is a keyword planner?

A keyword planner is a program developed by Google that helps individuals find out which keywords are the most effective to use based on the main keyword that is entered in the search bar. To determine the best keywords, the program tells the user specifics about each one, such as avg. monthly searches, competition, and low/high bids.

So, how and where exactly do you get access to Google’s Keyword Planner? Luckily, the program is completely free to use! All you have to do is first create a Google Ads account by clicking here. Once you do that, you’ll have access to the Google Keyword Planner. Just click on the wrench at the top of the page labeled “Tools and Settings,” then “Planning,” and then lastly, “Keyword Planner.”

From there, you can begin researching keywords! The keywords that you’ll want to utilize will hit this criteria:

  • They have a minimum of 1,000 average monthly searches
  • Competition is “Low”
  • Bid range is within your budget

The reason you’ll want to use keywords with a minimum of 1,000 monthly searches is so that your keywords will draw the most attention possible. A keyword strategy consisting of keywords with less than 1,000 monthly searches is going to lead to a low rank in search engine optimization. Low competition is also a good criteria for keywords because that means your use of the keyword is more likely to get noticed by users that use it. If the competition was higher, you’d risk the chance that your content will get “lost in the crowd,” of other more popular content. Lastly, you want to make sure that you account for the bid range of each of the keywords. If you happen to be less experienced and don’t know what to look for, Google can make automated bid strategies for you that are designed to maximize whatever strategy you choose. Here is a brief excerpt from Weslee Clyde on newbreedmarketing.com,

“Using an automated method will allow Google to maximize for whichever strategy you choose, based on the budget you have set.

Automated bid strategies include cost per action, target return on ad spend, maximize clicks, maximize conversions, maximize conversion value, target impression share and manual cost per click.

Google will base the changes it makes off of past performance, but it can’t be used to account for things like recent events that may affect the performance of your ads.” Clyde, W. (2020, April 10).

That’s pretty much the basics of how to effectively conduct keyword research! In the meantime, I hope you have found this to be helpful on your quest to become more proficient in you use of keywords, and I do recommend that you check out the other blog posts I have created.
